Julia* was experiencing difficulties with her new CEO. The critical and demotivating work environment they had created left Julia feeling unsure of herself, despite her two-decades of success in PR and communications. She knew she had to make a change but was uncertain what it should be or how to start.
Julia came to me for one-on-one coaching with the goal of strategically planning her next career move. Meanwhile she was also looking for guidance to address the immediate issues in her current role and minimise the negative impact of her current workplace on her confidence and overall happiness.
Throughout our coaching sessions, we worked on:
- Exploring possible career paths that built on her strengths, values and key priorities.
- Developing her personal brand and how to present it effectively, both verbally and in writing, to potential employers.
- Formulating strategies to authentically articulate and sell herself in her CV, LinkedIn profile and during interviews.
But coaching doesn’t take place in isolation. While coaching sessions offer dedicated time to focus on yourself, the daily pressures of life persist. During this time, Julia faced family mental health issues and as well as struggling with her own. To address these immediate challenges, she took some time off work and began to see a counsellor. This break relieved some pressure and allowed her to take her time and make carefully planned career decisions.
Armed with the strategies we worked on during our coaching sessions, Julia was able to secure a job working for a CEO whose values align with her own: championing women in leadership and instilling a culture of transparency and honesty. Additionally, Julia was able to set herself up for success by building relationships with key stakeholders, creating healthy boundaries to avoid burn-out and requesting feedback within the first three months from her start-date.
Now, Julia’s career is going from strength to strength. She recently secured a permanent role and a deputy chief executive title.
Congratulations, Julia. I couldn’t be prouder of all the work you’ve put in and your well-deserved success.
