Five top trends every PR and communications practitioner in Asia needs to know
Earlier this year, Amanda Lee, Prospect’s Director in Asia, was invited by PRCA Asia to share her perspective on the topic of “2023 the Year of the…” Before a virtual audience of over 70 PR and communications practitioners around Asia, Amanda relayed her experience of the changing recruitment environment and provided her forecast for the year ahead.
While Amanda has specialized in recruitment for in-house and agency roles for more than five years, the past two years during the pandemic have been particularly significant and eventful. This period in Asia has been characterised as “a candidates’ market” with high-quality talent in high demand but short supply.
However, in the first quarter of 2023, Amanda and the team at Prospect has witnessed signs of a significant shift in the landscape including redundancies in the banking and tech sectors, a generation of workers reluctant to return to the office environment, and the challenges of rising cost of living.
During her presentation, Amanda identified 5 top trends that every PR and communications practitioner and hiring manager in Asia needs to know:
1. Say goodbye to salary peaks and mass hiring
Paychecks will no longer be the weapon of choice in the war on talent and companies are no longer in such a hurry to fill seats.
2. Companies are still hiring
Many industries are transforming their business models post-pandemic which has created a demand for people who offer new skills, diverse experiences and new approaches.
3. Rebalance between employer and employee interests
It is no longer a ‘candidate’s market’. As working models continue to evolve, companies are making tough decisions to find a balance between productivity and accommodating the demands of their people.
4. Hybrid workplaces are here to stay
There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to hybrid working. Company policies vary widely depending on organisational culture, industry sector and leadership.
5. More thought around work and culture
Many people have used the pandemic period to re-evaluate their lives and the role of work. Consequently, candidates are now more thoughtful about the roles and companies they choose to work with. Employers should be prepared to ‘show’ as well as ‘tell’ the story of their culture to prospective employees.
